Open Doors at the GSSI

The Gran Sasso Science Institute is an advanced studies center developed around the specific nature of the INFN Gran Sasso National Laboratory and of the University of L’Aquila. Not only because of this site specific origin, but also as a strategic choice, the GSSI established strong links with L’Aquila in a continuum process of reinforcing them. The launch of four new doctoral programs in physics, mathematics, computer science and urban studies, started almost two years ago, is a significant step for both research development and high-level training, providing an enrichment…
Joel Lebowitz

Seminar: Microscopic Origin of Emergent Collective Behavior of Macroscopic Systems Wednesday, October 29, 2014 - GSSI Main Lecture Hall - h. 15.00 Speaker: Joel Lebowitz, Rutgers University. Joel Lebowitz has established himself as a world leader in statistical physics, a discipline that studies the relations between the dynamics of the billions of microscopic constituents of matter and the resulting behaviour of matter itself on a macroscopic level, regardless of its state (solid, fluid, gas or a transition between these phases). To understand the dynamics of these infinite systems, whether in…

For the first time in the history of scientific investigation of our star, solar energy has been measured at the very moment of its generation. This has been announced by the Borexino experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories (LNGS) of the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN). The study is published in the prestigious international journal Nature.Borexino has managed to measure the Sun’s energy in real-time, detecting the neutrinos produced by nuclear reactions inside the solar mass: these particles, in fact, take only a few seconds to escape…
