VITRANO Chiara

I was born in Brescia in 1986. In 2005 I enrolled at the University of Pisa, where I started studying for a B.A in Social Sciences, completing my educational path with a Master of Science in Sociology. During my studies I developed a strong interest in urban sociology and in the connections between physical and social spaces in contemporary cities. I graduated in 2012 with a thesis on the social and urban segregation of migrants, and its connection with urban security policies and media representations.

In 2012 I had the opportunity to accomplish a stay in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where I served as an intern in “Public Achievement”, an organization promoting projects for young people in conflict areas.

In 2013 I spent 6 months in Berlin, where I did an internship in USUMA GmbH, a market and social research company. Living and working in two cities characterized by highly challenging urban issues gave me a stronger motivation to deepen my understanding of the urban dimension. My research interests concern urban vulnerability, exclusion and socio-spatial segregation, fear and security management, gentrification processes, migrations.

My personal interests include urban exploration, especially of abandoned structures, music, creative industries and related events. I worked in the University of Pisa’s web-radio station as editor, speaker and events planner. I enjoy travelling.
