Laser-Plasma accelerators of ions are based on a collective paradigm of particle acceleration and represent a possible alternative to conventional accelerators for applications in high energy density physics, material science, and medicine. In this talk  we shortly review the basic concepts and the state of the art, and then we focus on two advanced schemes, namely radiation pressure acceleration and collisionless shock acceleration. For both schemes we describe the potential for application, the known issues, and the possible connections with astrophysical phenomena.
