Efficiency Research in Information Retrieval

The seminar will introduce the basic concepts of information retrieval and provide an overview of the generic structure of a web search engine. We will discuss how documents are collected from the Web, how they are organized in a search engines and how they are processed to answer to user queries. Then we will focus on some specific topics in query processing, such as processing strategies, learning to rank and algorithmic optimization. To conclude, some main results on the efficiency of web search will be presented, together with open research questions.
